Honorary Consul

The Embassy of Canada to the Kingdom of Denmark, based in Copenhagen, is seeking a new Honorary Consul in Nuuk. Since 1992, Mr. Lars Peter Danielsen has dutifully served as Canada’s Honorary Consul. After 27 years or faithful service, Mr. Danielsen and The Embassy have agreed that it is time to seek a new Honorary Consul to represent Canada’s interests in Greenland. To that end, the Embassy is pleased to invite applicants who meet the Essential Criteria below to apply to the position. Summary of Duties

Functions may include:

  • consular assistance and advocacy for Canadians
  • development of commercial and economic relations
  • on occasion as required, providing political/economic analysis
  • passport, citizenship, and notarial services
  • support for the supervising mission in maintaining bilateral relations
  • a local contact point for the supervising mission
  • administrative and logistical support for official visits
  • representation at diplomatic, ceremonial, and public affairs events

 

Area of selection/Eligibility

Open to internal and external applicants who are legal residents of Greenland, who meet all of the essential requirements stated below, and whose applications are received by the closing date.

Consideration will not be given to candidates who:

  • occupy any governmental position in Greenland or Denmark
  • may be unable to deliver the program due to other commitments
  • are politically active
  • may have a real, apparent, or potential conflict of interest

Essential Qualifications

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language.  Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:

  • A degree from a recognized university, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training and/or experience.

 Language:

  • Proficiency in English (Oral and Written)
  • Proficiency in Greenlandic and/or Danish (Oral and Written)

Experience:

  • Demonstrate a tangible connection to Canada through citizenship, occupation, education, family assets, or professional affiliation.

Rated Requirements

The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed.  Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

 

Knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding of political, economic and social dynamics in Greenland
  • Capacity to maintain good relations with local government authorities
  • Capacity to have rapid access to local government authorities

 

Abilities/Competencies:

  • Interpersonal skills - well-connected and good standing in/with local communities
  • Ability to be service-oriented in order to meet service standards
  • High ethical standards and integrity
  • Sound judgment

 

 

Asset Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications.  Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

  • Independent means and availability of a suitable location (e.g. office) where consular clients can access service during regular business hours (e.g. Monday to Friday)
  • Proficiency in both Canadian official languages (English and French)
  • Experience in decision-making with respect to sensitive and complex issues
  • Experience dealing with different levels of government
  • Experience in performing consular work

 

Organizational Needs

Special consideration may be given to increasing the overall gender parity and diversity in our network, and as such, women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply.

 

 

Operational Requirements

  • Be residing in Greenland the majority of the year
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Ottawa, Canada for training.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and use Government of Canada information systems as deemed relevant. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Greenland on behalf of the Government of Canada upon request (and reimbursement)
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of normal working hours on behalf of the Government of Canada upon request.

 

Conditions of Employment

  • Candidates must have a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period. (3 years) Before an offer of employment can be made, candidates must provide a local address as proof of residence in Greenland so that if selected, it will appear on the offer letter.
  • Obtain and maintain a reliability rating (security clearance) from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
